Every year is full of shocking and unbelievable stories that include our favorite celebrities. They allow us to gossip around the water cooler for hours. It seems however that 2013 was a special year because there were so many major stories published in the tabloids almost every single week! Here is Alexandre Laca’s take on the people who had the biggest impact of them all.
10- Lance Armstrong interview with Oprah Winfrey
In tenth position this year we have Lance Armstrong and his emotional and honest interview with media Queen Oprah Winfrey. Armstrong, who won the Tour the France 7 times in a row, had been rumoured for years to be using performance-enhancing drugs. Finally the story broke out in 2012 when one of his fellow teammates came clean about it, which lead to a major scandal in the world of sports. In January 2013, Lance Armstrong did a 2 hour long sit down interview with Oprah where he confessed everything and expressed his regrets for what he did.
9-Simon Cowell baby drama!
In July, one of the biggest stories regarding famous British TV judge and producer Simon Cowell exploded all over the world when news and pictures were reporting that he was sleeping with his friend Andrew Silverman’s wife Lauren Silverman and that the two were expecting a child together. This story led to nasty divorce where in August Lauren Silverman was officially free and was able to live a new life with Simon. Their baby is due early 2014
8- Paula Deen and her racist comments
The celebrity chief from Food Network and New York Time best-seller lost a lot of fans this year over racial and discriminatory comments. In early June, Paula Deen did an interview with the National Enquirer and when the reporter asked if she used the N*** word she confirmed that yes, she had in the past, still does today and that for her it is just a word that has no meaning. When the news was published, Food Network announced that her contract would be not renewed. Since then, major sponsors and stores such as Kmart, Sears, JC Penney and publishing companies all canceled their coollaborations with her. Since then, Paula apologized to the world for her comments.
7- Farrah Abraham Sex tape, plastic surgery, DUI, fame and fortune.
Farrah Abraham, from MTV hit shows 16 & pregnant and Teen Mom, has managed to do everything in order to stay ‘’ relevant’’ and in the spotlights. She made herself one of the most talked about people of the year. Earlier last year, she was arrested for a DUI and in May she hired famous porn actor James Deen to do a private sex tape. Later on, she leaked it to Vivid entertainment and tried to make look as though someone had stolen it from her. This was proven wrong later on. From this tape, she received an extremely lucrative deal of nearly 1 million dollars plus 25% of all sales. Since then, she has been multiplying TV appearances in shows such as Dr. Phil and many more.
6- Amanda Bynes and her one-way ticket to hell
Former child star Amanda Bynes has made people talk about her for all the wrong reasons. Last year, the actress was arrested twice for DUIs and once for drug possession. She has attacked multiple celebrities on Twitter such as Drake, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and even Barack Obama. She also shaved her head, was wearing crazy colored wigs and tried to set her dog on fire. An act for which she was finally sent to the UCLA mental institute where she was diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. As of now, the court has put her under conservatorship, which means her mom is responsible for her and her money until further notice. Bynes enrolled at FIDM where she will study fashion. She is under medication and taking it one step at a time.
5- R.I.P Cory Monteith, Paul Walker and Nelson Mandela
2013 was a year where we lost important people. In July, we lost Canadian actor Cory Monteith who died at the age of 31 from an overdose due to a mix of heroin and alcohol inside his hotel room in Vancouver. Cory was famous for his role on hit TV show Glee and his relationship with co-star Lea Michele. In early December, we lost Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker who died in a tragic car accident at the age of 40. Also in December, political leader, freedom fighter and a man who changed the world, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95.
4- Lindsay Lohan, the phoenix rising from the ashes.
It’s no secret that Lindsay Lohan has been through a rough couple of years. From multiple arrests, personal and professional trouble and her eternal struggle with alcohol and drugs. It seems that the former child star has put the past behind her and is ready to move forward after being court ordered to spend 90 days in rehab. She has never been in a situation so favorable to her. To make sure she stays on her positive path, she asked Oprah to be a mentor and to guide her and help her rebuild what she once upon time had: a career. Since rehab, she co-hosted Chelsea Lately, appeared in two episodes of Eastbound & Down and is scheduled to appear in an 8-episode docuseries produced by Oprah, airing this winter on OWN. According to TMZ a tell-all book deal is around the corner as well.
3- Justin Bieber, the end of the Bieber fever?
2013 has most definitely been a year full of events for pop superstar Justin Bieber. He saw his name in every weekly tabloid for stories such as: drug using, underage drinking, reckless driving, controversial break-up with pop star Selena Gomez and of course his ‘’douchey’’ behavior. This year, Justin did a world tour where drama followed his every step. In a recent interview, Justin told the radio host that he was retiring. I call another craving for attention. Do you?
2- Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, ‘’Kimye the power couple’’
2013 has most definitely been an eventful year for Kim and her family. Her divorce with NBA player Kris Humphrey only got finalized in April, almost 2 years after Kim filed for it. After dating rap superstar Kanye West for a brief amount of time, he announced that the couple were expecting a baby in late 2013 which led to her highly publicized pregnancy and questions about her weight. Finally, baby North West was born in June. In September, Kanye rented an entire baseball stadium and asked, in front of friends and family, Kim to marry him with an overpriced diamond ring. Don’t worry, if you didn’t get a chance to see the engagement it will air on the upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians this year.
1- Miley Cyrus….
And, of course, this year Miley Cyrus has made herself the most talked about person on the planet. From her controversial change of style, her highly public break-up with actor Liam Hemsworth and her performances at the VMAs and other important award shows, she made the world talk about her. This has worked at her advantage because her singles Wrecking Ball and We can’t stop made it to #1 in many music charts around the world. This year, she is planning a world tour so I think it’s fair to say that the controversy surrounding her is not quite done yet.
